I did community service at the Boys and Girls Club in Syracuse NY at on Hamilton st. It was a great experience and i plan on doing it again sometime soon.
The Boys And Girls Club is and organization for kids to go to after school. Its is open two to seven Monday through Friday every week and keeps kids busy and staying out of trouble in the streets and also inside with such things as basketball, fun games, computers and much more. There is a need for there services because they say there is an increasing number of kids at home without adult supervision that need to know that someone cares for them and that's exactly what they do.
There was a lot of memorable experiences at the boys and girls club. One thing was playing basketball with the kids, they were very respectful and staff and myself made sure that they were sharing because they had a little problem with that. I also had fun playing computer games with the kids and helping them with there homework. I think these tasks impacted the organization because they need more volunteers to show kids the direction to go and also the positive affect i rubbed off on them.
All my reactions were positive for the most part but i would say that i was quite surprised when a little boy used bad language and forced the staff to move out of his way when she wouldn't let him. But they handled it well by simply sitting him down and calling his dad to come and get him. One of my positive reactions was when all the kids in the gym were playing with each other without any arguing. I don't feel like i made a difference because I'm sure lots of people come and go.
I would highly recommend someone to do there community service here because its positive for the most part, yeah some kids talked back but im sure being there will help them grow better then they would outside of this organization. Staff and volunteers direct them in the way that they need to be and like i said, theres always something to do to stay busy.
Hello. My name is Miss. Noll and I am a student at SUNY Oswego. It sounds like you enjoyed your time volunteering at the Boys and Girls Club and that you learned a lot from the experience. Your reflection was very well written.
ReplyDeleteArianna, This is a very thoughtful reflection. Although you said you didn't make a difference - just volunteering for 10 hours there allowed the staff to attend to other duties, while you helped supervise and assist the youngsters. I bet they had fun interacting with you. Great job
